Every step of the journey is the journey. I found design inspiration in the myriad path styles and techniques. Unlike American gardens, organic mulch was almost non-existent. Typically, the soil was left bare, making it easy to rake or sweep walks clear of debris. Only bamboo groves had a mulch of old stems left on site. Many steeper paths featured stone or faux bois water bars and stone channels for erosion control. More heavily traveled ways used gravel or combinations of stone and concrete.
